In 1951, immediately after his exams, Ulrich Stoll went on an extended journey through France looking for traces of Expressionism. He captured these impressions in many of his works. Gradually Ulrich Stoll's economic situation improved. He received not only private orders, but also commissions to create advertisements for businesses as well as from the city of Trier.

In June 1952, Ulrich Stoll started to feel ill, accompanied by a severe headache. The next day, he almost had to creep to the door to open it for a doctor friend of his. The devastating diagnosis was polio.

At that time, the iron lung was one of the last possibilities available to cure him. He was directly transferred to Koblenz. His sister Herta and his wife, Paula Riemenschneider hovered over him. Ulrich Stoll realized how the numbness crawled from his toes upwards. As the paralysis reached his fingers, he declared himself to be dead. He knew that he would never be able to paint any more.

He transferred his estate to his sister and told her how she should proceed.

A few hours later the paralysis reached his heart. Ulrich Stoll died on the 23rd of June 1952 at the age of only 29.

He said good-bye with words of confidence for his beloved and with a final smile on his face.
